The Federal government’s move to cease its activities in Nigeria has been described as “very alarming” by Twitter, a microblogging platform.
Sarah Hart, Twitter’s Senior Policy Communications Manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, stated this in an email to The Cable. The message reads:
“The Nigerian government’s statement that Twitter’s operations in the country have been banned is profoundly disturbing.
Hart was cited as adding, “We’re investigating and will provide updates as we learn more.”
In a statement posted on Friday afternoon, June 4, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, confirmed the platform’s suspension. He highlighted the suspension as a result of the “consistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of harming Nigeria’s business life.”
