Buhari is expected to leave Nigeria for an emergency ECOWAS meeting

President Muhammadu Buhari is due to travel out of Abuja on Sunday for an emergency ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit in Accra, Ghana.

The summit was called to discuss Mali’s recent political events.

The meeting was convened at the request of the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government and President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, according to a statement released by Buhari’s Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

“As the situation in Mali evolves, Nigeria has condemned the May 24 military coup, the subsequent incarceration of the president and prime minister by soldiers, and demanded for the immediate and unconditional release of all civilian officials detained,” the statement stated.

President Buhari will be accompanied by Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maj. Gen. Bashir Salihi Magashi (rtd), Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Richard Adebayo, and Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
